As millennial parents, we are constantly searching for ways to nurture our children’s development and independence. One piece of furniture that has gained popularity in recent years for achieving that is the learning tower, also known as a kitchen helper tower. But is investing in a learning tower worth it, and how much should you spend on one?

The Case for a Learning Tower

A learning tower is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for your child to engage in various activities, especially in the kitchen. Here are some compelling reasons why you might want to consider investing in one:

  1. Promotes Independence: Learning towers allow your child to reach countertop or table height, enabling them to participate in cooking, baking, and other tasks alongside you. This promotes a sense of independence and self-confidence.
  2. Hands-On Learning: Children learn best by doing. A learning tower provides them with hands-on experiences and a chance to explore practical life skills from an early age.
  3. Inclusive Family Time: It fosters a sense of togetherness as your child can be part of family activities without being excluded due to their height or age.
  4. Safety: Learning towers are designed with safety in mind, featuring guardrails to prevent falls and a sturdy base to prevent tipping.

Now that you are convinced of the benefits, the next Question is… How Much Should You Spend?

As parents to 3 and 5 yo boys ourselves, we’ve actually considered the market before settling on a design (trust us, we’ve tested the whole range):

  1. Budget-Friendly Options (Around RM100-150): You can find basic learning towers made of wood or plastic in this price range. Typically the wood ones are add ons to a step stool – functional and safe, and it serves the purpose.
  2. Mid-Range Options (RM150-RM500): In this range, you’ll find (what seemed) sturdier and additional functions such as adjustable heights and removable steps or a foldable design for easier storage. You do need to ask yourself if you will diligently remove the steps if you have >1 child? Will you really store it away every day and take it out? If the answer is yes, then you may consider it 🙂
  3. Premium Choices (RM500+): Premium learning towers tend to be made of high-quality materials and have thoughtful design elements. They may come with added features, such as a chalkboard / whiteboard for creative play or is convertible to a chair/table.

Considerations When Choosing a Learning Tower

When deciding how much to spend on a learning tower, consider the following:

  1. Durability: Investing a bit more in a durable model can ensure that the tower lasts through your child’s developmental stages. Typically a normal child will not need the side railings after 4yo if exposed early.
  2. Adjustability: Look for a tower with adjustable height settings to accommodate your child’s growth. Consider if this is practical if you have more than 1 child in the same environment.
  3. Safety: Ensure that the tower meets safety standards and has features like non-slip steps and secure guardrails.
  4. Aesthetics: While not a primary concern, a well-designed learning tower can complement your home’s decor. If it is too bulky, chances are it will be a white elephant.

In conclusion, a learning tower can be a valuable addition to your child’s developmental journey. The decision of how much to spend ultimately depends on your budget and preferences. Whether you opt for a budget-friendly model or invest in a premium one, the benefits of fostering your child’s independence and involvement in family activities are well worth considering a learning tower as an investment in their growth and development.
